Frequently Asked Questions

Do you answer your own email?
Absolutely! I enjoy it, too. I may not always get back to you the very same day you write in, but I do my best to respond as promptly as possible, usually within a twenty-four hour period.

How did you get started doing what you're doing?
I've always loved to write and tell stories. In 2001, after trying unsuccessfully to interest a publisher in a little book I'd written called, "Lessons Learned on Bull Run Road", I decided to self-publish it. That's the short version, of course, but it is the beginning. The website was birthed to market the book, and the radio, TV, and speaking gigs came out of the website.

Can you tell me how to get a book published?
If I could, I would. My strongest advice for anyone who wants to write is to just do it! Write a lot and read a lot and learn everything you can about writing. I once heard someone say that almost everyone says they want to write a book but most people mean that they want to have written a book. That makes tons of sense to me. It's work, but if you love it, you have to do it. I can't begin to tell you how to attract a traditonal publisher's attention because my opportunity to work with Penguin Group, USA came after I had established my own platform. Having said that, I can, and would be delighted to tell you who I worked with on my self-published books. That would be Booklocker.com. Tell 'em Shellie sent you!

If I send you my self-published book will you review it on your website?
This is a hard question for me. The short answer is I would love to-- but I can't. The long answer is that I have had to adopt this policy because I'm getting flooded with books and there is only one me, (okay, besides the voices in my head, but they don't count.) This is NOT, and I mean NOT because I don't believe there are many wonderful self-published authors out there. Remember, I was in that number for a long time. I "get" you. It's just a time constraint, friends. I can't seem to find but twenty-four hours in a day.

How do I find recipes I've heard on the radio?
Well, you can scroll down the three pages of recipe archives, or, if you were actually thinking of cooking it sometime this calendar year you can put a couple key words from what you remember in my search boxand cross your fingers. If I knew why it didn't work every time I'd fix it. *grin*

How do I book Shellie?
Check out my Book Shellie page and contact Porter! Or, if you'd like, just shoot me an email personally.

How do I advertise with ATS?
There is advertising information here but the same thing applies. If you're interested, email me and we'll talk.

How do I get my local radio station to pick up your radio segments?
Burn segments from my audio demo page on a CD and drop 'em by the station, or send them to the audio demo page at the website. If they won't listen put up a tent in front of the station and tell them you plan to live there until they do.

How can I get my local TV station to include your video segment in the morning show?
See radio question above.

Do you write all of your own material, or do you have a ghostwriter?
Ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha, excuse me, ha, ha, ha, ha! Sorry, it's just that the idea of a ghostwriter just cracks me up. There are no ghosts here but my Grandma Rushing used to tell me ghost stories late at night that scared the BeeJesus out of me.

Where will you be speaking next?
I can't remember. But I've got in written down in my organizer and on my calendar page. Also, watch for postscripts on the home page. I often mention them in the weekly porch chat.
