Note from the Author - Twas the Night before the Very First Christmas

One Christmas Eve many years ago now, I lay in bed wondering how to impress upon my two small children the true meaning of Christmas. They knew the story of Jesus’ birth. They’d already been in countless church plays as a shy Mary, a fidgeting Joseph, or even a hesitant wise man. Still, it seemed each year more and more of our family time was spent on the commercial side of the holiday.

I was amazed by my kids’ abilities to recall every jingle on television; they could practically recite Rudolph backwards! I longed to give them something as age appropriate and easy to remember about the true Christmas story.

Twas the Night before the Very First Christmas was born out of that desire. As the idea began to play in my head, I slipped out of bed and into the stillness of the living room, where I jotted down the words under the light of the family Christmas tree. My story uses the recognizable cadence of Clement Clark Moore’s familiar version of Santa Claus to share the birth of Jesus. Twas the Night before the Very First Christmas has been a part of our family tradition for years now. I hope you will enjoy it enough to make it a part of yours. I would be delighted to send you an autographed copy.

Warm regards,

       Shellie Rushing Tomlinson
