"Persistence and Emma's Big Pay-Off"
Monday, August 30th, 2010

A lot of people think arranged marriages are a bad idea but I’m not so sure. Phil and I have been together for twenty-nine happy years— and counting— and our marriage was arranged. I decided he was the right one for me and then I arranged it so he thought it was his idea!

Oh, please, fellas. This is much more common than you men would think. My cousin teaches high school in North Carolina. She’s seen this happen a lot. Carol says she can usually tell the difference between the kids that are just dating and the couples that will make it to the altar. Sometimes it takes a few years, they might even drift apart during college, but the determined ones find their way back to each other.

Carol told me that a few years ago she once had a senior girl in her English class who had her heart set on one of classmates named Ben. Now, Ben was the big man on campus. He was a talented athlete, a good student, and a clean-living well-mannered country boy. Emma wasn’t the only girl chasing him and she wasn’t necessarily the prettiest, but Carol says she was by far the most determined. At the time, Ben was dating another girl, but Emma never gave up. End of story— Ben and Emma graduated from college last spring and Carol says they recently announced their engagement. Carol wasn’t the least bit surprised.

She remembered once when she had been standing near Emma’s desk lecturing the class on the importance of having a good vocabulary. “Here’s a tip,” she told ‘em, “use a word ten times and it will be yours for life.”

Carol said she heard Emma whisper under her breath, “Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben,Ben, Ben, Ben.”
