Southern Comfort of the Week

"Beware the Dangerous Focus"

The headline was straight off the AP – Hypnotist Accidentally Puts Himself in Trance. I had to know more. It sounded like something I could’ve done—if I was capable of putting anyone under my power, and I’m not. Oh, sure, I’ve tried. That kind of power would’ve been very helpful for someone who grew up under the steady gaze of parents as strict as mine. It would’ve come in handy with my own kids, too. “Yes, Jessica Ann, when I count to three you will fall into a deep sleep like your baby brother instead of running around like the Energizer Bunny on steroids.” And, it goes without saying that I wouldn’t have filed away a ton hundred rejection letters before having my first book published if I could successfully mesmerize into acting on my suggestions.

I scanned the rest of the article and learned the hypnotist was a newbie who had accidentally put himself in a trance after practicing the ancient art for five straight hours while looking into a mirror. Thankfully, his wife was able to contact his teacher/mentor for help. Mr. Hypnotist has now agreed to practice auto-suggestion only if his wife is present, and she has a key word to release him in the event of another accident. (I’m thinking it’s something like “Einstein.”)

On a similar but more serious note, the word teaches us to search our hearts, to examine ourselves and make sure we’re living true to Christ’s commands. I firmly believe in these regular checkups. However, afterwards we should take our eyes off of ourselves, put them squarely on Jesus, and make Him the object of our attention and affection, relying on His power and not our own will to walk out those good intentions. Here’s a fact. We become what we focus on. Look to Jesus. Too much self-interest may not hypnotize you, but over time it will steal your joy and render you wholly ineffective in His service.

The Second Installment of the Locker Room is here--

*My very good friend, Rhonda Perry, and I have created a segment called "The Locker Room" for our church. Each short skit teaches a Biblical truth that is discussed in a brief teaching session that wraps the whole idea up.
