"Southern Comfort"
"Knowing and Doing"

It was a night of fun, food, and fellowship celebrating mothers and daughters and I’d been invited to speak. I gave it my best. I had a great time opining on the multi-faceted ties of that special relationship, from the childhood days when your mama is your heroine, to the teenage years when she becomes your arch enemy, and on into the rest of your life when, if you’re fortunate, you begin to know her as friend. I’d brought my own dear Mama as Exhibit A.

Afterwards, I was visiting with a mother and her daughter who were approximately the same ages as me and my daughter when the mom, who’d just heard me whine about Jessica living on the other end of the world, (A.K.A, Houston), asked me a strange question. “Didn’t you tell your daughter she wasn’t supposed to marry and move away? It’s written in the Bible!”

I returned her smile while trying to figure out if she was serious, and if so, what scripture she was twisting to come up with that! The younger girl rescued me. “What she means is, it’s written in my Bible and she’s the one who put it there!” The mother grinned. “That’s right,” she admitted. “I gave her a Bible when she was a young girl and wrote it on the inside jacket! Didn’t you?”

“No,” I said, “I didn’t realize you could add your own stuff.”

Of course, we were all teasing. We know adding our own stuff to the Bible can’t really help us with our secret agendas anymore than twisting the scriptures can give us an alibi. Still, it seems a good time to remind ourselves that an accurate knowledge of God’s word won’t help either if we don’t live by it. As Jesus said in John 13:17: “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”
